Adopt-A-Wash
Program

We all know about the numerous washes and dry riverbeds that run throughout Oro Valley.  Some are quite large - like the Caņada del Oro Wash - and some are only small tributaries through our neighborhoods.

We also know that these washes are not really dry at all - that they can run with water after a rainstorm or even after human events like washing a car or irrigating a back yard.

The Town of Oro Valley has established a program to help to keep our washes running freely and cleanly throughout the year.

The Goals of the Program are:

  • To improve the flow of water by removing debris

  • To reduce or eliminate harmful contaminates that may seep into our groundwater supply

  • To provide educational opportunities for schools and civic organizations to learn more about the desert environment

  • To maintain civic pride by taking responsibility as well as credit for keeping our washes clean and free-flowing

How can we get involved?
I
f you are interested in participating in the Oro Valley Free and Clean program, you should contact the Adopt-A-Wash Coordinator at 229-5070.
Groups might include:

  • Scouts

  • Neighborhood associations

  • Youth clubs

  • Special interest clubs (e.g., environmental)

  • Families

  • Schools

  • Private businesses

You will receive a full briefing from our Coordinator regarding the program and the requirements. Your commitment will combine both physical work along with the satisfaction that comes from knowing that you have improved Oro Valley's environment.

How are washes chosen?
The coordinator has a list of washes to which the Town has been given permanent access.  You may choose a portion of a wash or an entire wash.

What do we do once a wash is selected?
You will:

  • Complete at least two cleanups and channel condition checks throughout the year.

  • Obtain participant signatures on a waiver form and return the form to the Coordinator.

  • Pick up free safety vests, trash bags and other equipment as well as a map of your wash.

  • Once you've attended to your wash, you'll return all your supplies along with a brief report to the Town.

  • And of course, you will maintain a safe working environment during your cleanup and condition checks

What will the Town of Oro Valley do?
They will:

  • Help you select a wash

  • Provide all the safety equipment, supplies, and training

  • Dispose of all the debris that is picked up from the wash

  • Erect signs that publicly recognize the organizations that have helped to keep the washes free and clean
